What happens after COP28?
COP28 has felt like a roller coaster ride since kicking off on 20 November. Finally a deal has been agreed after days of wrangling and discussions. There are mixed feelings as would be expected but I do feel there is room for optimism. This is the first time the deal calls on all countries to move away from using fossil fuels.
The wording is ambiguous – no mention of phasing out fossil fuels – but the text does recognise the need for deep, rapid and sustained reductions if humanity is to limit temperature rises to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. As Laurence Tubiana, the head of the European Climate Foundation and a key framer of the Paris Agreement, points out, this is “a transformation of the mindset.” And shifting many major players’ mindset away from fossil fuels is still met with resistance.
Now that COP28 has ended, let’s take a long hard look at actions we, as individuals, can take to address climate change. Certainly we can’t afford to wait for big business to choose between financial growth or the planet. We must take things in our own hands.
Earth Champions’ has been deploying a simple yet highly effective concept that focuses on bringing out the best sustainability solutions within communities around the globe.
This is achieved by discovering practical local solutions people can become actively involved in to make a positive difference. Ours is a Circular process that builds on knowledge and measures the impacts and how to adopt and improve communities’ sustainability efforts.
We framed this as an Olympics for the Earth, involving all nations and its people, businesses and governments in the most important competition of all. Certainly the sporting world has many heroes and followers and we now must find new types of champions to take the stage and kick a goal for the planet and all life on earth.
The very fact that COP28 has resulted in a watered-down version of what many were hoping for is all the more reason to step up and join forces, community by community around the world.
