China Waste Business

Alex Tam and Felix Chung, EcoSage Limited

A community recycling depot has been established to collect wide spectrum of recyclable materials from the community, organisation and cooperates. Our customers involve household residents, schools, NGOs, local and international firms.

We aim at establishing a recycling culture by educating people that recycling is one the easiest way to protect the environment and should be part of our daily life.

An efficient collection system is crucial to develop the recycling culture we are trying to establish a community collection system by integrating the latest recycling technology, local culture, physical constraints and people attitude.

We also keen on marketing environmental friendly products and promoting products with environmental elements to the public.

Our experience indicates that most Hong Kong people know the importance of recycling but they lack a good platform to start their first step.  As our depot is in a densely populated area but lacking of recycling facility or space, most people find it convenient to bring their recyclable materials to the “recycle bank”.  Moreover, the depot also serves as a community education centre to teach people how to do recycling.  We believe that if we can help people to remove the barriers (such as space, incentive, habit, attitude, motivation) for them, recycling is actually not difficult.

With the success experience of the first recycling depot in Ngau Tau Kok, we are going to clone the model to start a new depot in Tsuen Wan.  In addition to the environmental function, the new depot will function as a link between the rag picker/ deprived and the social welfare system.  Since most rag pickers/ deprived are socially excluded from the society, we aim at bringing them to our welfare partner, St. James Settlement.

WEEE and plastic recycling are the recycling problems that we are mostly concerned with.  We are actively studying the solution in the aspects of policy, regional planning, market development and the latest technology. By considering the solution in a holistic approach, it is possible to assist the recycling industry to achieve closed looped economy.
